Twohands’ Watch The Throne Review

Please remember that I had to listen to this album all the way through for the second time to write this review. It is a kinna stream of ~~piss~~ consciousness thing. I didn’t go into great details, I just wrote what I was thinking as I went through each track. Feel free to listen to the tracks as you read the reviews.

I have some good friends who like good Hip Hop who like this a lot. So I have had to listen to it again to see what all the ~~fassy~~ fuss is all about.

1 - No Church in the Wild (Feat. Frank Ocean)

Leave the wack singing to those who do it best, ODB Biz and Grand Puba.

Who is Frank Ocean? Really? Is he a rapper of a fuckin brand of after shave? Sounds like a shitty version of Mos Def singing.

Beat is nice. Autotune is so wack, I thought Jay Z was anti Autotune?

Advil rhymes with mad real!

Listened to 85% of the track.

2. Lift Off (Feat. Beyoncé)

Oh God! Please. A Rocky soundtrack? Don’t mix family and business Jay.

Who gives a fuck about you taking your coat off. Put it back on and fuck off.

I like Paris. Dope place. Jay can’t do fast rapping please stop. Lists of Michaels is really deep. I don’t hate the beat. Chorus is bad. I hate it when Kanye says ‘met me at the maaaaaaaaaaaaall!’

Beat is simple. I like simple. I don’t hate it. Middle 8 was a bit puke enducing however.

This beat is sick. In all the good senses. Great sample. Piano works so well. Flip the vocal by Otis is fresh. I like the simplicity to it too. Kanye starts rapping and I turn off. I don’t care about your other other benz. Who gave Jay Z 5 passports? I have only one! Not fair. Is he from 5 countries or does he just travel a lot?

Sample is nice. Beat is nice too. Kanye shut the fuck up and stop ruining it.

Love the bell on the snare. I hate auto tune shit. I feel queasy and a bit sick, not in a good way.Ego and we go rhyme. This is simple. I like simple. I don’t like this though. Boring and flat. Did I say how much I hate autotune. Me and the RZA connect is not a very good hook. Next.

It has been a long time coming but at last it is here. The new mix in the Wire inspired series. Each mix takes a character from the show. We have done; Omar, Bunk (The), Slim Charles, Bubbs, Bodie and Stringer Bell so who is next?

This is the first time I have used two characters but these guys are such a double act that they are always together. Snoop and Chris.

Muscle for Marlo is busy work and these two are more than up to the task. Bodies were bringing heat on all the Baltimore dealers so Marlo decided to make sure there were no bodies.

Kool Keith + Dan The Automator + Q Bert = Oh Shit! It’s quite a simple equation for those who are not so keen on Maths. Sometimes everything comes together perfectly. Like In PE’s first 3 albums or the Liverpool team of the 80’s. If this album was a sandwich, Dan would be the bread. Big hunks of fat bread with ill crispy crusts. Kool Keith would be the meat, sick sausage meat that has been through the grinder a few times too many and has come out all messed up. Q-Bert is the hot sauce that burns your mouth. It’s a great sandwich. But better than a sandwich you can eat it again and again.

Dr. Octagonecologyst is the title to the album and without giving away all the fun it is kina sick.

‘A Visit To The Gynecologyst’ is funny as hell. Soon you will be up to summer squash!
‘Girl Let Me Touch You’ is a love song of epic proportions to put any LL Cool J join t to shame. Girls love that one.

For me the cuts by Q Bert really made this album amazing and he really kills it on the scratches on a few tracks but the cuts at the end of ‘Blue Flowers’ and on ‘Bear Witness’ are some of my favorite cuts in Hip Hop!

Now I know this is the rapnerds blog. But, I am gonna drop something that is a little different. Today is my brothers birthday and in his honour I will give you one of my favorite reggae albums ever. This is Aces International, a live session featuring Eek-A-Mouse, Yellowman, Fathead, Little John, Toyan, Welton Ire, Buro and Billy Boyo. This session was recorded live and features some truly memorable stuff from all the artists but for me Eek-A-Mouse and Yellowman killed it on this recording. The reaction of the crowd to the big tunes as they drop is amazing.

His cold and calculated approach to the game made him the perfect partner to Avon who bled red rather than String's green. Some time ago I was asked to make a short movie for a little film festival we are having here in sleepy Tainan. I am far from a movie maker or a film buff but I have tried my hand a few times. For this movie I chose to make a video for one of my songs.

The song is called Daylight or Ti Mei Geng in Taiwanese. I made it about 4 years ago and I still like it. The video was all filmed in Tainan. It is a very budget production.

Just watched a wicked documentary last night called Copyright Criminals, an entrant in the 2009 Toronto Film Festival, and it gets a big Rap Nerds thumbs up. I posted about it a year ago, then forgot about it til recently. You can get info about it and buy it here, but being the criminals you are you might want to get it here. (I mean, come on, it was on PBS!)

It features interviews with Q-Bert, Mix Master Mike, Chuck D, Mr. Len, George Clinton and the Funky Drummer himself Clyde Stubblefield, among others. You'll wish it was longer, but it's definitely a must-see.

Public Enemy

"If ya'll really like to rock the funky beats, somebody in the house say 'hell yeah'!"

Public Enemy are perhaps one of the most listened to groups in the history of Hip Hop. I know it sounds a little over the top but it must be true. My homie agnew gave a great book called :Don't rhyme for the sake of riddlin' - Russell Myrie, it is all about PE. Reading it takes me back to my teen years. Some of the insights from the book are amazing for me. I have listened to PE's albums hundres of times and finding out these secrets/histories about the creation of the music and the situation surrounding it has caused me so much genuine joy.

I have been listening to PE steady since I opened page one, one, one........one. Thus, I decided to add some of my favorite insights and music from one of the greatest Hip Hop groups ever. This first post will be about PE's second and most well known album. 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back'. What a long and bold title. The title comes from a quote on one of the tracks on the first album, 'Yo! Bum Rush The Show' called - 'Raise the Roof'. The lyric goes: "and for real it's the deal and the actual fact/ It takes a nation of millions to hold us back". While reading a Canadian magazine article about their first album which was titled "It takes a Nation of Millions to Hold us Back" Chuck D and Hank Shocklee realised the power of the title and used it for their ground-breaking second album.

"You're blind baby, you're blind from the facts of who you are coz you're watching that garbage"

Flav was the comic relief to Chuck D's hard rhymin. However, he was a talented musician in his own right. Playing many keyboard parts and the drums. On 'Rebel without a Pause' perhaps their most famous song, and I quote "Flavor played the beat on the drum machine continuosly and perfectly for the whole five minutes and two seconds". This was quite the revelation for me. I had always though Flav was just the jester. It seems he made a big musical contribution to the Albums. Yeeeeeeeeeaaaaah Booooooooooyyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeee!

At the begining of Flav's solo track, 'Cold Lampin With Flavor', there is a quote 'No more music by the suckers' Flav then goes on to say ' Yo! man what does he mean by suckers man? Yo, he only trying to put a black eye in the gang.' While this was funny for me all those years ago listening to the album, it now apears that there was quite an interestind story behind it. The quote is from DJ Mr Magic who had a very popular radio show in the late 80's in New York, he played Public Enenmy No 1 and then dissed the group due to some confussion about PE being down with KRS 1 and Scott La Rock who had been at war with the Mr Magic's homies, TheJuice Crew. Flavor listened to the radio hard and was always ready with the pause button on the tape. He recorded Mr Magic's quote live on the air and then proceeded to use it in his hit song.

The album starts with an introduction the a PE concert in London. This always struck me as a youth. Why did they use their London concert? American MC's very rarly mentioned London, my city, so when London was name checked at the beginning of the album and throughout I was very excited. Chuck, at their UK concert at the Brixton Academy went on to say "Yo, fuck Thatcher, fuck that dog faced bitch" further endearing him to the British Hip Hop fans, myself included.

One of the moist amazing facts I found was that 'Don't believe the Hype' was not supposed to even get on the album. It took Run DMC's, DMC to persuade the group that the track was dope. He used to rock it in his car all time. I have included that single so you can see what a tragedy it might have been had we not been warned 'Don't believe the Hype'.

Bubbs, or Bubbles, one of the few to make it all the way to the end of season 5 in one piece. The struggles he goes through with his addiction to 'that white' run through the different seasons. One of the few characters from the Wire to have something of a happy conclusion.

This mix is also the first combined effort by myself and agnew. A true rapnerds production.

Slim Charles was a reletively small part in 'The Wire' but he was there from start to finnish unlike most of my other favorite characters. A man who knew to move with the times. This was called 'Sewing MAchine' due to the quote I found for the beginning. Now it's called 'Jus Got Mo Fierce'.

The Re-Up

It's a time for giving and at Christmas we all love to try to give away things that we have tried to give away before. So here are The Wire mixes from the last year or so. Yes, I am slow at doing them. I wish I could blame it on being a perfectionist but a few listens to the mixes will put paid to that theory. So, I have had a few requests to re them up and I am a generous soul.

Not only are they reed up but they are re mastered and they come with fresh new covers. What could be better.

I will add one mix every day till Christmas, kinna like an advent calender with Lil Fame and MF Doom behind the windows screaming at you about glocks and vats of urine.

The first mix is "Best Not Miss" The famous advice our main character, Omar, gave to Weebay about what happens when you come at the king. This was called 'Slow Flow' but we all listened to Stringer Bell's advice and are renaming our product. This was the first Wire mix. Part II tomorrow.

Big Daddy Thang!

Some of my friends from the UK might think of this one when I talk about big daddy!

Other more North American friends may think of this big daddy.

However, rapnerds will know that there is only one Big Daddy. Big Daddy Kane.

Unlike any rappers before him and unmatched to this day. BDK is a hero to the rap nerds. He defined a whole part of my childhood. While I could never manage to quite pull off the high top fade, when I got mad shapes shaved in my hair it was for Mr Kane. If only he knew how much I tried to be like him. Not alone, Kane was a huge influence on most of my friends.

When I meet new nerds these days, I don't judge them, but I always ask what they think of the Big Daddy to get a general idea of how our friendship is gonna pan out. Perhaps the 18th letter had as much e.f.f.e.c.t on me as a little nerd, but Kane had mad swagger.

There is a lot of debate about which album was the best. However, I have gone with the first three albums because they were the dope ones and i didn't listen to the later ones as I didn't want my image of The Big Daddy to be tarnished. The first one, Long Live The Kane is the one I have listen to the most. The hard rhymes and beats really define classic Hip Hop for me. The second was a little more hit and miss but still heads and shoulders above the competition. the third one, Taste of Chocolate was one I listened to less but it has grown on me in my latter years (Big Shout to Sean for reminding me about this nugget).

I dedicate this to two of my most loved and respected nerds.

As a teacher at Tainan Girls High School I feel I get to e.f.f.e.c.t the future of Taiwan's movers and shakers. Most of my course is an attempt to get my students to think outside the box and step away from their test-based life. I confess that sometimes I do things more for my enjoyment than their English learning.

We make movies with the kids every year and this serves as a fantastic way for them to dabble with the concept of creative expression. The movies they make are great and they seem to have a lot of fun making them. However, as the students move to the second grade there is a lot of pressure from teachers and parents alike to concentrate on tests and test results. Hence, time 'wasted' on doing silly video projects that take up many sleepless nights is seen as an ine.f.f.e.c.tive use of their time.

This semester I told the kids we were still gonna do a video project of some kind but that we couldn't do movies due to complaints from the powers above. They were the first to suggest the idea of doing a music video. My ears pricked up as I imagined the Hype Williams style video we could make.

To cut a medium length story to a fair size, we ended up doing a video for Eric B and Rakim's immortal classic 'Microphone Fiend'. This has been a favorite song of mine for years an it has very little profanity so it was the ideal choice! It was that or La Di Da Di by Slick Rick but the 'with your wrinkled pussy, I can not be your loverrrrrrrrr' lyric made me go for the Eric B and Rakim joint.

It was simple. I told them to learn the lyrics, no mean feat, as they are not rap nerds like us. Then shoot some sections of the song for the video. Play the song when you are filming so I can edit it in time to the music. Only two groups did this making my editing job next to impossible. I also told them to find good places on the school campus to film and to take a few different takes of the same sections so I could edit them together. Get some clothes and props for the shoot I told them. The results I must say are quite fantastic and hilarious at times.

Well in fact they do now. I have a show every Tuesday night on shining radio in Tainan, Taiwan. 88.1 on the FM dial if you are in the city. However, most of you nerds are not in Tainan anymore (punks that you are).

I should warn you that there are no turntables in the radio station so I can not do any mixing and cutting and scratching and all that good stuff, it's more just introducing the Taiwanese audience to some of that real Hip Hop and Funk and reggae.

So my new job is kinda a bummer...glad to be working, but some days are rough. One of the most annoying things is the omni-present radio noise; it had been years since I listened to rock radio so the first couple shifts were surprisingly good. After a couple weeks, however, I've started wearing earplugs so I don't have to listen to the same 8 songs all the time. Seriously.

During a particularly brutal shift last week, I was walking into a different area (sometimes people have different stations in different areas) when I thought I heard
some familiar sounding horns. My first thought was "what motherfuckers are sullying this classic?". I was a little annoyed. Then I got closer and heard

New mix is done.

Like all my mixes you can expect some dope tunes, hard beats, not quite perfect mixing and cutting as well as tunes you know and some you might not. This time around I decided to add some UK Hip Hop. There are some new joints and some old ones you might have missed.

Strange and I like it.

The Boogie Monsters have always been a favorite group of mine. In 1993 the amount of good Hip Hop that was coming out was vast. So much good stuff was coming out that some things got a little passed over. The Boogie Monsters never really achieved great success. Their first album has got longevity. I still draw for it and listen to is all the way through, rare with Hip Hop albums these days.

What is it about the Monsters that I like so much? Hmmm, not really sure. It's not as hardcore as I tend to go for. There is even singing on quite a few of the tracks! I have never been a fan of singing on Hip Hop tracks. There is not a heavy DJ presence on the album, not much cutting. The music is more melodical than I usually go for. Quite busy and multi layered tracks. It has a strong Christian message, not something I look for in a great LP. So, Why do I like it?

The beats are still dope. The lyrics are great. Good enough for me. 'Recognized Thresholds Of Negative Stress' was the first song I heard and was the first single. I love this track still and try to sneak into sets as often as possible and even when it clears the dance floor. "Mark of the Beast' feels a bit like an early Fugees song. But, A real favorite tune is 'Old Man Jacob's Well'. In this one an old child killing psycho's tale of how he kills his latest kid is told from his (Jacob) and the kids points of view. Dark. Very dark but done so well.

Strange is a good way to describe the album but as the song says, 'Strange, and I like it'. At the time it came out I think lots of people thought it was a bit too weird. More still think it's too odd. I like it.
