The Wire Mixes Pt IV 'The Game Is Rigged'

The Game Is Rigged

The most recent of the wire mixes features Bodie 'I ain't goin nowhere, this is MY corner' Broades. Bodie has so many good lines in the series it was hard to find the right ones for the mix. He was one smart ass pawn for sure but it was a great shame that he never made it to be the king.

Slim Charles was a reletively small part in 'The Wire' but he was there from start to finnish unlike most of my other favorite characters. A man who knew to move with the times. This was called 'Sewing MAchine' due to the quote I found for the beginning. Now it's called 'Jus Got Mo Fierce'.

The Wire Mixes Re Up Pt I

The Re-Up

It's a time for giving and at Christmas we all love to try to give away things that we have tried to give away before. So here are The Wire mixes from the last year or so. Yes, I am slow at doing them. I wish I could blame it on being a perfectionist but a few listens to the mixes will put paid to that theory. So, I have had a few requests to re them up and I am a generous soul.

Not only are they reed up but they are re mastered and they come with fresh new covers. What could be better.

I will add one mix every day till Christmas, kinna like an advent calender with Lil Fame and MF Doom behind the windows screaming at you about glocks and vats of urine.

The first mix is "Best Not Miss" The famous advice our main character, Omar, gave to Weebay about what happens when you come at the king. This was called 'Slow Flow' but we all listened to Stringer Bell's advice and are renaming our product. This was the first Wire mix. Part II tomorrow.

Hard Work Emcees Pt. 1 - Vast Kramer

Not hard working. Hard work.

This post is dedicated to my friend Ari, who forced me to give Vast Aire a chance and introduced to the term "hard work emcee".

Some rappers say things like "We spend cheese, in the West Indies
Then come home to plenty cream Bentleys"

but others say things like "The last cat who tried to see me, he now gotta touch braille"
or
"I'm that voice in the back of LL's head saying "You gonna let a weed plant do that?" yeah, I like to instigate"

Vast Aire is type 2. He's a beast on the mic but even Two Hands would have trouble getting a club bouncing to Cannibal Ox.

Here are a bunch of singles Vast has guested on, so get out the headphones and give guy a couple listens - one's not gonna do it.

Ace Lover - Area Code 1(212) 12''

Masai Bey - Paper Mache 12''

Fine, I admit it. Some UK hip-hop is ok.

I'm really feeling the Foreign Beggars & Guilty Simpson track featured on DJ Two Hands hot new mix "The Game Is Rigged", so I did some searching for some other Beggars stuff. Don't Be Lactarded

Here's a quick mix I hooked up recently, thought I'd do something a little different this time. This is my first go at a "themed" mix, which I'm usually not a fan of, but this time it's lovely.

Errr...except you'll have to excuse the quality of the Hurricane G track. It was ripped from a cassette recording of a Stretch & Bobbito show and apparently the only recording, but waaaay to dope to exclude. Hopefully the Green-Eyed Bandit has it in the vaults somewhere...

Anyways, in honor of my sisters and other lactards everywhere,

Big Daddy Thang!

Some of my friends from the UK might think of this one when I talk about big daddy!

Other more North American friends may think of this big daddy.

However, rapnerds will know that there is only one Big Daddy. Big Daddy Kane.

Unlike any rappers before him and unmatched to this day. BDK is a hero to the rap nerds. He defined a whole part of my childhood. While I could never manage to quite pull off the high top fade, when I got mad shapes shaved in my hair it was for Mr Kane. If only he knew how much I tried to be like him. Not alone, Kane was a huge influence on most of my friends.

When I meet new nerds these days, I don't judge them, but I always ask what they think of the Big Daddy to get a general idea of how our friendship is gonna pan out. Perhaps the 18th letter had as much e.f.f.e.c.t on me as a little nerd, but Kane had mad swagger.

There is a lot of debate about which album was the best. However, I have gone with the first three albums because they were the dope ones and i didn't listen to the later ones as I didn't want my image of The Big Daddy to be tarnished. The first one, Long Live The Kane is the one I have listen to the most. The hard rhymes and beats really define classic Hip Hop for me. The second was a little more hit and miss but still heads and shoulders above the competition. the third one, Taste of Chocolate was one I listened to less but it has grown on me in my latter years (Big Shout to Sean for reminding me about this nugget).

I dedicate this to two of my most loved and respected nerds.

9. Mister Cee's Master Plan
10. Word to the Mother (Land)

The second was Ill.

It's a Big Daddy Thing

Microphone Fiends

As a teacher at Tainan Girls High School I feel I get to e.f.f.e.c.t the future of Taiwan's movers and shakers. Most of my course is an attempt to get my students to think outside the box and step away from their test-based life. I confess that sometimes I do things more for my enjoyment than their English learning.

We make movies with the kids every year and this serves as a fantastic way for them to dabble with the concept of creative expression. The movies they make are great and they seem to have a lot of fun making them. However, as the students move to the second grade there is a lot of pressure from teachers and parents alike to concentrate on tests and test results. Hence, time 'wasted' on doing silly video projects that take up many sleepless nights is seen as an ine.f.f.e.c.tive use of their time.

This semester I told the kids we were still gonna do a video project of some kind but that we couldn't do movies due to complaints from the powers above. They were the first to suggest the idea of doing a music video. My ears pricked up as I imagined the Hype Williams style video we could make.

To cut a medium length story to a fair size, we ended up doing a video for Eric B and Rakim's immortal classic 'Microphone Fiend'. This has been a favorite song of mine for years an it has very little profanity so it was the ideal choice! It was that or La Di Da Di by Slick Rick but the 'with your wrinkled pussy, I can not be your loverrrrrrrrr' lyric made me go for the Eric B and Rakim joint.

It was simple. I told them to learn the lyrics, no mean feat, as they are not rap nerds like us. Then shoot some sections of the song for the video. Play the song when you are filming so I can edit it in time to the music. Only two groups did this making my editing job next to impossible. I also told them to find good places on the school campus to film and to take a few different takes of the same sections so I could edit them together. Get some clothes and props for the shoot I told them. The results I must say are quite fantastic and hilarious at times.

Here is the magic, please forgive the lack of lip sync at points.

Radio

"Radio, suckers never play me"

Well in fact they do now. I have a show every Tuesday night on shining radio in Tainan, Taiwan. 88.1 on the FM dial if you are in the city. However, most of you nerds are not in Tainan anymore (punks that you are).

So to listen online you need KMPlayer Go to here

Then you need to http://fm881.stut.edu.tw/

Tuesday nights 9-11 pm Taiwan time. You are gonna have to work out what that means for you. I am trying to sort out a replay on Thursdays 1-3 pm. Will keep you updated.

I should warn you that there are no turntables in the radio station so I can not do any mixing and cutting and scratching and all that good stuff, it's more just introducing the Taiwanese audience to some of that real Hip Hop and Funk and reggae.

What's An Autotune?

So my new job is kinda a bummer...glad to be working, but some days are rough. One of the most annoying things is the omni-present radio noise; it had been years since I listened to rock radio so the first couple shifts were surprisingly good. After a couple weeks, however, I've started wearing earplugs so I don't have to listen to the same 8 songs all the time. Seriously.

During a particularly brutal shift last week, I was walking into a different area (sometimes people have different stations in different areas) when I thought I heard
some familiar sounding horns. My first thought was "what motherfuckers are sullying this classic?". I was a little annoyed. Then I got closer and heard

"Walk the fine, short line, and put the needle to the grind
Representin’ one kind, seeing eye for the blind
Witness what I carry on bears a further purpose
From how we do slam a few, then you want to purchase"

I lost my shit and went to tell everybody else, after the song of course, but not one glimmer of recognition. The rest of the shift I kept hoping for more jewels, but all I got was that BEP song that makes me want to kill myself.

I miss the nerds...

Sewing Machine

New mix is done.

Like all my mixes you can expect some dope tunes, hard beats, not quite perfect mixing and cutting as well as tunes you know and some you might not. This time around I decided to add some UK Hip Hop. There are some new joints and some old ones you might have missed.

As with the last two mixes I have dedicated the mix to a character from 'The Wire'. 'Slow Flow' was for Omar, 'A Code' for The Bunk. This mix is for Slim Charles. I thought for a while who to chose this time and a few lines I remembered of his convinced me to go for the man who really moved with the changing times.

Sewing Machine - DJ Two Hands

01 - Heltah Skeltah - The Art of Disrespekinazation
02 - Sadat X Feat KRS-One & Rahzel -Blow Up Da Spot
03 - Chester P - Suicide Switch
04 - Real Live - Real Live Sh__t
05 - Kid Cudi Feat Wale - Is There Any Love
06 - Cool Kids - Blackmags
07 - Ramson Badbonez - Blackmags Remix
08 - Phil Anastasia ft. Inspectah Deck & Sean Price - Symphonies
09 - Dark Sun Riders Feat Brother J - Dark Sun Riders
10 - Defari Feat Dialated - Behold My Life
11 - Busta Rhymes Feat Lil Fame - The Game Room
12 - Vast Aire - Tipping Dominoes
13 - Redman & Method Man - Dangerous MC's
14 - Az Feat The RZA - Doe Or Die Remix
15 - klashnekoff ft. Skriblah & Kyza - Sayonara

Enjoy.

Randomness is next to godliness

No Rhyme or Reason to today's post, just some random joints for your listening pleasure.

The first one I meant to post a while ago but never got around to it and I'm a little excited about this one. You get 5 mixes of Hickeys, but the real treat here is the B-side heater "Milk Does The Body Good". This one definitely shoulda been on the Slow Flow mix. Audio Two - Hickeys Around My Neck 12"

"TV stars, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson, her brother Michael, feeling babies for some rectum action" Tim Dog & Kool Keith sounding a little disrespectful over beats by Kut Masta Kurt & Evidence. Vurrry goood. Ultra - Industry Is Wack 12"

Really really dope comp of old mostly Hobo Junction stuff. Oooh! Ya know ya can't front on the style. Lots of Saafir & a Casual song I'd never heard before (keep ya hands off it Dan, I'm using it on my next mix!) Southpaw Records - Cheapshots, Low Blows & Sucker Punches EP

I don't remember where I heard this first, but I'm always surprised at how many people don't know it. The original is dope, but the addition of De La Soul alongside Da Babees & The Mighty Mos pushes it over the top. Beats & acapella incl.
Da Bush Babees - The Love Song Remix 12"

I uploaded this one just for the Vast Aire joint, but the LoDeck & Zion I joints are nice too, all produced by DJ Ese & Hipsta. Back when the internet was just a baby I searched far and wide for pretty much any mixtapes I could find & I ordered a bunch. A few really sucked, but the Ese & Hipsta tape stood out & I still bump it today. Various Artists - Embedded Studios 12"

Finally, a somewhat hard to find Pharoahe Monch & DJ Spinna single from 2000 I think. Like the other stuff posted here today, this is probably not gonna get a lot of run in the clubs. Pharoahe Monch - Tooley Crew Personified 12"
