77 Problems

OK, Nerds.

It's Test Time! In true nerd fashion I have collected 77 of my favorite intros to a famous, or not-so-famous verse. All you need to do is work out who said it and in what song! Easy for the real nerds amongst you.

I will post the answers in a weeks time.

No looking on the internet for the answers!
No questioning my spelling!
No Sleep Till Brooklyn.

I Wonder Why...

Ah, Tony Touch mixtapes. Much like pepperoni pizza, Tony Touch tapes are predictable but always delicious - you know you're gonna get some M.O.P., some Wu-Tang and a banger or two from his girlfriend Heather B. No blends or mash-ups, not a lot of ridiculous Spinbad-style scratches, but Mr. Toca perfected the art of the walkman mixtape (or club bangers if you're Dan).

Here are two new additions to the vault, Tapes #46 & #47, friggity fresh for '95, that I found over at http://recogthereal.blogspot.com/. They posted wack ass rips tho, so I cleaned 'em up just for yous guys. Unfortunately these are CD rips, so you don't get the last 10 minutes of the B-Sides...

As I consider my limited job prospects in these recessatory days, I'd like to take a moment to remind everyone out there feelin the crunch to look up at all the golden parachutes fallin from the sky and remember that crime pays in mad ways, and it's all good.

Grave Diggin In The Crates

GraveDigging in The Crates.

The time has come for the darkness to be set free on the Rap Nerds blog!

In honour of Halloween the originators of horrorcore are being acclaimed. 1994 was a great year for Hip Hop with countless classics coming out of New York in particular. The sound was booming and horrorcore didn't fit into any pigeon holes.

Really what the hell were these guys going on about, who wanted to hear twisted stories of suicide and mass murder? Well Prince Paul and the RZA together made a classic theme album and although at the time I remember liking it but thinking it was a bit weird and not really 'real' enough! Ha, the follies of youth.

Listening these days really does do credit to a very well crafted LP with a sound that was a bit too ahead of itself. Prince Paul was going from Daisy Age to Madman's Diaries seamlessly.

Gravediggaz - Diary Of A Madman 12''

Gravediggaz - 6 Feet Deep LP

Gravediggaz - 1-800-Suicide 12''

Gravediggaz - Mommy, What's A Gravedigga Remix 12''

Gravediggaz - Nowhere To Run, Nowhere To Hide 12''

...and another re-up right here

Slick Rick Jewels

A few Slick Rick Jewels.

I noticed a few days ago a special on the bbc 1xtra radio website all about Slick Rick.
Now those who know me and have had to sit through a few of my Hip Hop rants will know I am a big Slick Rick fan.
The special was all about 'The Great Adventures Of Slick Rick' It seems it came out 20 years ago. 20 years ago is correct. Shit, I was 15 and well on my way to being a Hip Hop nerd.
Now my first Slick Rick discovery was 'La Di Da Di'. I used to rap the lyrics into the mirror, I mean who didn't at that time. Everyone at my school knew all the words to 'La Di Da Di'
much to the chagrin of my teachers who failed to see why their lessons were not so well memorised. Now at the time I didn't have 'fresh Bally shoes' or 'fly green socks' I didn't forget my Kangol I just didn't have one.
I got my first one about a year ago, a present from two Canadians who share my nerdy affections (Big up Cappy and That Guy). Slick rick was the man! He was from the UK, a real Londoner. OK, he left the UK for the BX aged 10 but hey, he's still the best UK export to the Hip Hop world, ever.
I can think of very few MC's I have the same kind of respect and admiration for. As a 15 year old with nothing to get in my way other than school, there was plenty of time to dedicate my life to learning all the lyrics to all my favorite Hip Hop songs.
Perhaps if I was 15 now I would do the same and I wouldn't hate on all this new shit that comes out these days. It's too easy to hate new Hip Hop because most of it is straight up marketing schemes like KRS said.
However, I think that the old school stuff really defines a great time of my life and hence the affection for it. Let's not fool ourselves some of the old stuff was wack, even Slick Rick had his questionable ones! No names! (Don't hurt me again, don't d- d- don't hurt me again)
So, here are a few of my favorite Slick Rick singles (Big up to The Drizzle coz he got them all for me).

Children's Story

I Shouldn't Have Done It

It's A Boy

Teenage Love b/w Treat Her Like A Prostitute

Enjoy as much as I still do.

"She said, great Scott! are you a thief?
Seems like you have a mouth full of gold teeth
Ha-ha, hah! had to find that funny
So I said, no child, I work hard for the money
And calling me a thief? please! don't even try it (right!)
Sit down eat your slice of pizza, and be quiet"

DJ Lessons

I have been teaching at Tainan Girls High School for a while now and I did a class with them about Hip Hop and rapping. In the class I tried to get the girls to write bragadocious lyrics and try to be boastful and to deliver their "raps" with verve. It was a relative success, some girls really went for it while others mumbled into their necks. The upshot of it was that the kids were keen to find out more about Hip Hop. Since I had told them I am a DJ they wanted to see how scratching worked.

A few weeks later I took my decks into the classroom and gave the girls a talk about how much I love my turntables and if anyone breaks them I would kill them and their families.

"Don't press down on the records too hard. Keep your hand away from the needle at ALL times!"

After I had gathered the courage, I let the girls come up in pairs and try some scratching on their own. All that is logical in my brain told me not to risk my precious little babies on these girls. Most of the students in my class had never seen a turntable before, those that had, saw one in their grandparents houses, big up the grandparents.

The results were quite amazing. Not from all the girls for sure. Some had little musical sense and sounded like cats being strangled. Others were too meek to really try and make any audible sound that their classmates might hear. However, some, just some, were like ducks to water. A few of the girls surprised me so much I was stunned to silence (those who know me will testify to the rarity of this event). After the class was over the girls asked me to show them some tricks. Never one to let an opportunity to show off pass me by, I did a bit of wheeling doubles. I had some ultimate breaks and beats doubles with me so I showed them how to make a loop with the same part of two identical records, the essence of Hip Hop as I told them. Three of the girls were transfixed and begged me to let them try! By this point I was so impressed with their keenness I let them have a go.......

Remember this is the first time these girls have touched a turntable and a mixer.

Chester P is one of my favorite MC's, I waited a while for this LP to come out. Formerly with 'Taskforce' a group he made with his older brother Farma G and DJ Louis Slippers.

You might not understand the slang and British references but feel it anyway nerds.

Teachers' Day

"I am rap music. Where I go, rap goes. Rap is like my dog, it's like my little pet. And where I go, I lead my litle pet with me." (The Source, 1992, c/o/ The Bible)

" I am hip-hop. But what is hip-hop? If hip-hop was to stand right in front of you and start talking, what would hip-hop listen to? Hip-hop wouldn't listen to hip-hop. Hip-hop probably doesn't even like hip-hop. Let me also say that I, personally, am more into reggae than I am hip-hop." (The Source, 1994, c/o The Bible)

Since rap nerds also occasionally bypass the boom bap and reach for sumpin' else, here's sumpin' else. Don't worry, there're still booms and baps:

Just a little video I found on my travels. It's an oldie but a goodie.

No Drew, I have not given up yet, but the trip is not over yet!

Natural Elements

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! Just found a good copy of the Natural Elements song I posted before.
Natural Elements - Tri-Boro

Monday, July 21, 2008

What your album lack is more Jay-Z

It' about time we got some more Jay-Z in here, and I'm guessing you other clowns aren't going to do anything about it, so here we go. Some of my harder to find and favorite Jigga songs. These have been approved for all rap nerds, so stop making that face and click the pretty blue words.

1. Streets Is Watching (Dirty) - This one had me searching for about ten years...first heard it on a Tony Touch tape (#58, I think), and it was only available on a promo single with 'Sunshine' on the A side. I don't know why they put the clean version on the album; that shit really pisses me off. Of course now it's not so hard to find the dirty version, but it's still a gem, haters.

2.Dig A Hole (Original) - I have no idea where this came from, but it's a waaaaaay better version of the track from Kingdom Come. Just Blaze is very hit and miss with me, but I can't believe they left this one of the album.

3. Dead Presidents III - This one's from the bonus disc that came with Kingdom Come - not really rare, but in case ya missed it...

4. Get My Shit Off - Timbaland & Jigga; this one never saw a proper release. Get it now if ya missed it, suckas.

5. In My Lifetime (Original Ski Version) - from '95 (his first solo 12"?) With still some traces of the Hawaiian Sophie flow, our young Jigga starts maturing:

"
While niggaz are shootin' stupid I'm carefully plottin', ways to make it rotten, Well planned hits until you're long forgotten,Y'all niggaz that utilize my style don't hurt me, cause on the low half of these rappin'-ass niggaz wanna work for me"

edit: Streets Is Watching (Dirty) Re-up

Slow Flow

It took a while for me to give in to the new school methods. I still like to think I am old school like that but in truth I ain't any more. I got Serato scratch live about 9 months ago. No more records, what do I spend my money on now?

This is the first tape/mp3 I made with Serato. It was pretty much all live with a few big F*%# Ups cut out. Hence, it's a bit rough around the edges. Yeah, excuses! Drew stepped up the game with dope artwork for the cover for his tapes so I had get my art on.

Indeed.

Slow Flow

1 Mr.Slow Flow - Evidence
2 Snap Yo Fingaz (Instra) - Lil Jon
3 Fuck The Law - Dead Prez
4 Roc-A-Fella Billionaires - Freeway feat Jay Z
5 Gold Chain Music - Bumrush Brothers
6 At Your Door - Clipse Feat Roscoe P, Coldchain and Pharrell.
7 The Riddler - Methodman.
8 Beef - Mos Def
9 Come On Baby - Saigon
10 Hustle On - Keith Murray
11 Badman - Murs
12 Greenery - Quasimoto
13 Good Clothes - Little Brother
14 State Of Grace - Raekwon

I know my breath stink, bitch, back up!

What with the internets and everything nowadays, it's can be tempting to amass a ridiculous amount of music and you can track down pretty much anything, making those once highly coveted singles available to everybody. Obviously I wouldn't complain about that, but amid all the collecting and compiling, some gems get lost, overlooked or just forgotten.

So today I'm calling on you groupies, fans, well-wishers and so-called contributors to take a sec and think back: What are some of your favorites that you think we might've lost, overlooked or forgotten?

1. King Tee & Phil Da Agony - Back Up (Joey Chavez Mix)

I gotta point out that this is the original track, beat by Joey Chavez & cuts by Babu, not the uncharacteristically wack Creators remix. Not really a song that makes you think, but with these guys it's all about delivery.

2. Natural Elements - Tri-Boro

This version is from the mix cd DJ Eclipse of Non-Phixion fame did in'98, so there are some cuts on it. When these guys get good beats they always rip it...and this one's fiyyaaahhhhhh!!! Well, not really but it is good; I think DJ Honda used the same sample on 'Real To Me'. The only other place the song appeared was on a single with a couple other tracks from this mix; it's one of the few songs that I've never been able to find.

3. All Natural - Stellar

One year I was asked what I wanted for Christmas and I asked for Natural Elements or Natural Resource records. You see, Ottawa wasn't exactly a hotbed for underground hip-hop, and the internet wasn't the bootlegging heaven that it is now, so my sister, coming from Chicago, was my only hope. When I opened my record-shaped present and found All Natural, I instantly assumed she got the name wrong and brought me some generic garbage. Then she told me that her friend had recommended them, but I remained skeptical until I had a chance to listen...hahaha...that doesn't sound like me.

4. Mau Maus - Blak Iz Blak

If you're not one of the 14 people that saw 'Bamboozled', you probably missed this one. Mau Maus is Mos Def, Canibus, Charli Baltimore, Gano "God-shoved-a-pool-cue-in-my-ass" Grills, Mums and MC Serch.

5. Aceyalone, Self Jupiter & P.E.A.C.E. - When The Sun Too A Day Off

I love the eerie vibe...like when you shut off the lights on one side of the room then have to run to the door on the other side before the monsters get you.

Jambox

"Fat boy, big jeans, MAC-10 in the vest/ With Mack 10 shoot scenes try to shoot up the set/ But I'm a G nigga, I loosen the TEC/ Wet the whole block shit, Grey Goose in the jet, pyoooooon/ Back to the Boogie/ Backpack rappers, they should have a plaque in the Boogie of me"

Just finished off another mix, this time mostly new-ish stuff: some new joints from some old dudes and some from guys I hadn't really listened to before now. I did it up proper rap-nerd style, with 2 tracks (Side A & Side B) and before you complain, I realize Side A is too long for a 90 minute tape, but you haven't used your walkman in years, so shut up.

Just for Ari & Pady I kept Jigga down to one song (ok, and one verse), and as if that wasn't enough I got Vast Aire AND Doom on there too.

Side A
Skillz - So Far, So Good (Remix) f/ Common & Talib Kweli
Jean Grae & 9th Wonder - 8

Lil' Wayne - Mr. Carter f/ Jay-Z
O.C. - Yes Sir f/ Sadat X
Little Brother - Sirens
RZA - U Can't Stop Me Now f/ Inspectah Deck
Rakim - It's Nothin'
Hi-Tek - How We Do It f/ Talib Kweli, Slim Thug & Snoop Dogg
Thirstin Howell III - Mo' Ghetto

Kardinal Offishall - Set It Off f/ Clipse
Pharrell - Cheers f/ Clipse
Jay-Z - 44 Fours

Part 1
Part 2

Tight like hallways, smoked out always

This is a quick mix I originally put together for Dan's ig'nant ass, but I've been bumping it steady so I figured I'd post it for the rest of the nerds.

Goodie MOb. was the first group that had me checking for shit outside the east coast (besides Tha Liks, Digital Underground & Tone Loc, of course). Looking back now, I don't know what I was thinking, but I didn't wanna hear anything west of Philly. Then I heard was 'Decisions, Decisions' off the Soul Assassins album and holy shit, there was good music outside of Queensbridge & Shaolin.

At that point I was obviously a little late to the party, but from Atlanta, out to L.A. and finally back to Houston, Goodie MOb. & OutKast opened up my eyes, er...ears, and I check for guys like Rick Ross & Ludacris today because of 'em.

Remember nerds, ya gotta keep it scientific.

"Well, I'm from the dirty, filthy nasty dirty south /So many niggas still think we soft /And I swore, I wouldn't never write no rhyme like this /But now you're startin to piss me off, ha ha ha"

Welcome to Rap Nerds

Just to get an idea of what we're workin with here, I'm gonna kick things off (that one's for Dan) with a little lyrics quiz. Match the football references to the emcees, rap nerds. Five outta five gets you a sticker...

Hint: One emcee has 2 lyrics.
